Hammer of God

The Legend of Charles Martel

8th century-The Dark Ages-The Roman Empire has long collapsed, European warlords fight each other for power and land, and the Moors have conquered most of Spain. One man man stands in their way as they move north to conquer France, and the rest of Western Europe.

Charles of Herstal, son of Pepin II managed to create a coalition of warring kingdoms to face the growing threat of the Muslim invasion. Political intrigue, assassinations, betrayal and uncertainty were his constant companions. But on Oct. 10, 732 at Tours, his 20,000 strong army of pagan Allemani, Frisians and Danes, along with Christian Saxons and Lombards faced off against 60,000 Moorish invaders.

His political and tactical genius secured the greatest strategic victory in European history. Thus establishing the groundwork for the future nation states of Europe. His grandson Charlemagne would inherit this lineage, becoming the first Holy Roman Emperor. Charles gave credit for his success to God, as there had been many signs that he followed faithfully.

So complete was their destruction, the Muslim scholars chronicled the event as "The Road of the Martyrs", and giving Charles of Herstal his nickname; "The Hammer."

Script in final edits on this amazing and powerful true story of the man who saved Western Europe, created the first major alliances in history, defeated a superior force, secured Christianity, and laid the foundation for future nation-states. His grandson was the first Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne.
